How To Choose Singapore Pilates Class?

Beginners often face problems while choosing the right Singapore Pilates class. Singapore Pilates classes may not be cheap and hence getting the maximum out of your Pilates investment is important. To achieve that, we first have to take some time to do some homework. Here are some tips on how to choose your Singapore Pilates class.

First, decide on the type of Singapore Pilates classes to go for. Singapore Pilates classes generally are split into Matwork Pilates class and Pilates Classes with equipment. Matwork Pilates classes are usually done on a Pilates mat with small props such as flex bands. Matwork Pilates classes can be done anywhere, even outdoors as the required equipment is mobile. As for Singapore Pilates classes with equipment such as reformers, these tend to be only available in Pilates studios. Different Pilates classes offer different benefits and it depends on the individual fitness goals and medical condition to determine the better option.

After deciding on which type of Singapore Pilates classes to attend, you have to shortlist a few places that offer Singapore Pilates classes before deciding which one to go for.

There are a few ways to get your list of Singapore Pilates classes.

Word of mouth

Ask around to see if you can get your friends or family recommendations. A referral from someone who has attended Singapore Pilates Class is the best way to finding your suitable Pilates class.

Search online, forums, read reviews

Visit websites and forums with Pilates reviews and testimonials. These reviews help to narrow down the good Pilates classes. It is also crucial to choose the right keywords when you do the search. More keywords are needed if you have special needs, for example, Pilates back pain, Pilates weight loss, golfer Pilates, Pilates for Youth etc. You may also find Singapore Pilates Facebook fanpages, join these fanpages and check out the activity of the Pilates studio such as reading Facebook comments and posts. It is also good to give the studio a call for further questions.

Check local newspapers/magazine.

Another way of finding Pilates classes will be through the local newspapers and magazine. Jot down their websites, contacts and include them in your list of choices.

Ask around the gym, community centers and even your office recreational club.

It is also advisable to check out the gym and community centers near your houses or even your office recreational club. Some of them may provide Pilates classes at an affordable prices. It may be more convenient for you if you live near these gyms and community centers or attend the Pilates classes at your office. However, do note that Singapore Pilates classes in community centers, gyms and recreational clubs may have more than 20 persons per session due to the lower cost. It may be more worthwhile to attend a specialized Pilates class with less than 12 persons to give you the attention that you need to maximize your workout.

After short listing these Singapore Pilates classes, you can then choose the most suitable one for yourself. Some deciding factors of the right Singapore Pilates class include:

1. Qualified Instructors

Ensure that Singapore Pilates class you chose has qualified and certified instructors. There are generally two types of Pilates certifications – Matwork Pilates and Comprehensive Pilates Certifications. Take note that Singapore Pilates instructor who is only certified in Matwork Pilates is not qualified to teach Pilates with equipment. Only instructors with comprehensive Pilates certification are qualified to include various types of Pilates equipment in the Pilates class. Check out the bio of these Pilates instructors too. It should tell you the experience of these instructors and how long have they been teaching classes. If you have special needs such as Pilates for Scoliosis, you should consult the Pilates instructor to see if they have taken relevant courses to provide you the special care that you require.

2. Pay Pilates Studio A Visit

Visit the Pilates Studio yourself to see if they are up to standard. Are the Pilates equipment well maintained? Also take the effort to examine the cleanliness of the studio. Most importantly, check out the atmosphere of the studio. Do you like the environment? Do you think it is conducive for Pilates classes? It is crucial to feel comfortable at your workout place.

3. Attend A Trial Class

Go for a trial Pilates class before signing up for your Singapore Pilates class. Most Singapore Pilates studios offer a trial Pilates session for potential clients. Do attend these trial sessions and determine if you benefited from this class. During the trial lesson, observe and interact with the Pilates instructors. Ask yourself if you like the Pilates instructor’s personality and teaching style.

4. Choosing Your Right Class Type

Select the right class for your needs. It is also important to go for the Pilates class which is right your level. 5. Location and Price

The location and investment of your Singapore Pilates class will determine if you will be able to attend it as regularly as you like. If your Pilates class is a hassle to get to, you may give yourself excuses over time not to go for lessons. If your Pilates classes are too expensive to maintain, you may not able to go as much as you want to. It is important to take some time to compare the prices of various Pilates lessons and determine the most reasonable one. Also, don’t be afraid to ask about any specials or packages that are available.

What To Expect In My First Singapore Pilates Class?

 

Walking into a Pilates studio and having your first Pilates lesson can be daunting. But fear not, we are here to fill you in with the information and preparation you need for your first lesson.

 

What To Wear To Your First Singapore Pilates Class?

 

Firstly, the most common question for the Pilates first timer is what to wear to first Singapore Pilates class. There are a few considerations in choosing your Pilates workout attire.

Your clothes need to be stretchable to allow for various Pilates exercises. Baggy clothes should be avoided as your Pilates instructor needs to see your posture to check the alignment of your bones and muscles. In addition, certain Pilates exercises may involve raising your legs or even in back roll position hence it is better to wear tights, long pants and fitting tops to avoid embarrassing moments.
Fancy footwear is also not necessary as Pilates is done barefoot or with anti-slip socks.
You will also want to avoid accessories such as long necklaces and belts. Other than being distracting, these accessories could be dangerous if they got caught up in the Pilates equipment.
It is also advisable to tie your hair back if it is long.
Clients are also not encouraged to wear strong scents in the studio as others may be sensitive to these odors.

 

Most importantly, keep it simple and wear what you feel comfortable with to your first Singapore Pilates class.

 

What will be taught in the first Singapore Pilates lesson?

 

It is good to have a rough idea on what will be taught in your first Singapore Pilates class. In general, three basic concepts which are most likely to be taught in the first Pilates lesson are:

Neutral & Imprinted Spine: Locating your neutral spine is a key in Pilates. You will be taught how to locate your neutral spine and pelvis and how to maintain your neutral spine while you breathe and move. The other key position in Pilates is imprinted spine. Understanding how your abdominals and pelvis interact with other each is critical to ensure each exercise is performed correctly
Breathing: In Pilates, as opposed to Yoga, you inhale from your nose and exhale from your mouth with pursed lips. You will need to learn the correct way of breathing without tensing your shoulders.
Spinal articulation: Spinal articulation, including flexion, extension, rotation and lateral flexion are exercises that need to be incorporated in every Pilates class to ensure your spine is mobilised and flexibility.

 

Interact with Your Singapore Pilates instructor

 

It is important to evaluate your Pilates instructor during your first Singapore Pilates class to determine if she is suitable for you. Having a suitable Pilates instructor will make your lesson more enjoyable and fruitful. You will also get more valuable information about your body, how to make it works efficiently and safely by strengthening your muscle and increase the mobility and stability of your joints

 

These are some questions that you may ask yourself while evaluating your Singapore Pilates instructor:

Does the Singapore Pilates instructor give clear, concise instruction and demonstration?
Can you fully understand the Singapore Pilates instructor’s instructions?
Does the Singapore Pilates instructor demonstrate the exercises to someone who is experiencing difficulties?
Does the Singapore Pilates instructor give enough attention to everyone?
Can the Singapore Pilates instructor name, set up and adjust the equipment?
Can the Singapore Pilates instructor modify the exercises depending on the clients’ needs and abilities?
Can you follow the pace of the Pilates class?

There must be some behaviors in the Singapore Pilates studio which turn you off. Let us take a look at these behaviors and if you are guilty of committing some of them, stop doing them moving on.

First, as a Pilates class client, you are here to learn and have fun. Hence, do not be too conservative and serious during your Singapore Pilates classes. You have to be mentally flexible so as to absorb fully and maximize your learning. Open up and accept the Pilates Instructor’s teaching approach or humor during the Pilates class.  This is the way to an interesting and fulfilling Pilates lesson!

Secondly, it is important to be considerate. You should observe social etiquette such as turning off your cell phone or switching it to silent mode and maintaining low noise levels during your Singapore Pilates class. It can be distracting to others when one takes a call during the Pilates class. Other than cell phone, loud chit chats and laughter are rather disturbing and even irritating. It is a definitely not recommended to chat during your Singapore Pilates class. Tone down and remember that others are still having their Pilates class. Lastly, do not be late for your Pilates class. Interrupting a Singapore Pilates class halfway makes it hard for Pilates class instructor to keep up the momentum for the Pilates class and affects other Pilates clients.

Thirdly, when you are attending Singapore Pilates group class, keep in mind that it is not a Pilates private lesson. Do try not to hog the Pilates class instructor to yourself and treat her like your Pilates private instructor. No one should be deprived of the Pilates class instructor’s attention because you are hogging her by yourself. Do be considerate and only consult the Pilates class instructor when you really have a problem. If you feel that you have difficulties catching up, it is worthwhile to spend money on one or two private Pilates class to understand the techniques and clarify any doubts.

Next, avoid wearing loose, baggy clothes to your Singapore Pilates class as your Singapore Pilates class instructor will need to be able to see your body posture such as the alignment of your bones and how your muscles are engaging during each Pilates exercise. Also loose clothes tend to ride up belly or legs while performing certain Pilates exercises. Comfortable, fitting and yet stretchable clothes are recommended for your Singapore Pilates classes. Fancy footwear is also not necessary as Pilates exercises are done barefoot or with anti-slip socks. You will also want to avoid accessories such as long necklaces, belts and even jewellery. It could be rather tricky if they got caught up in the equipment or props during your Singapore Pilates class. It is also advisable to tie your hair back if it is long.

We understand that everyone wants to smell good and perfume does get handy. However, you have to keep in mind that others may be allergic to perfumes. In addition, the smell may be distracting during a workout. Therefore it is not advisable to wear perfume to your Singapore Pilates classes.

Lastly, please avoid gossips and unnecessary comments during your Singapore Pilates class. It is distracting and inappropriate when you share your views about your Singapore Pilates instructor or other clients during your Pilates class. Be it complimentary or not, it is interrupts the Pilates class and waste everyone’s time. Each lesson is planned in such a way that all Pilates excercises can be completed within specific timeframe, interrupting the class may lead to you doing less Pilates exercises or affecting the next Singapore Pilates class as your Pilates class is delayed. Keep discussion and comments after your Singapore Pilates class!

It is common for people to complain about others. However, one may neglect the fact that she may also have some habits which turn others off. Please do take note of above behaviors and try to avoid them. In doing so, everyone benefit and can enjoy their Singapore Pilates classes.
